Sunday Matinee: A Sufi Meditation w/ Irina Tweedie

‘I want God,’ I heard myself saying, ‘But not the Christian idea of an anthropomorphic deity. I want the Rootless Root, the Causeless Cause of the Upanishads.’ – Irina Tweedie

Hello friends,

It’s been a while since we last spoke but if some of you are still out there, my sincerest hope is that kindness has been the benediction of the year thus far. For my fellow Argonauts who’ve embarked on the pilgrimage to no land, let naught trouble thee as “years” are merely perturbations that disturb the tranquility of the inner iridescence.  The wisdom traditions say that thou art outside the bondage of time and space.  For you I merely offer a reminder – seek to find as there’s no answer without a knock.  The wise ones teach that satchitananda is available to he who develops the discriminatory faculty by which the subtle is distilled from the gross.

As for your friendly rebel without a clue, I’ve voyaged to the land from whence I came to reconnect with the aspect of myself long shrouded by the obscuration colloquially referenced as “I.” The “I” thought is  somewhat slippery to source, but with patience and persistence one subdues the servant of the Self.

They say that when a man embarks upon a quest to find himself he ends up finding a whole lot more than he bargained for. Somewhat paradoxically though, this strong desire for self-gnosis has led to a complete relaxation of self-purpose and a willingness to serve the Grand Pattern of Universal Procedure. Though therefore unable to entirely verify the veracity of this principle of vivification, a certain completeness has gradually made itself known to me over the past few months. That being said, the Supreme Schematics have seen to it that certain great teachers continue to cross my path to grant the supplications of the innermost cavern of my heart.

Irina Tweedie is one such teacher and I was pleasantly surprised to find this video on YouTube. Irina is of the Naqshbandiyya- Mujadiddiya Sufi Order and I share this today hoping that she serves as a key-maker to any persistently locked doors on your quest. Though we must continue our childish play beguiled by Maya, it’s often good to remember that the very light that glistens in the eyes of children can be seen radiating from star to star.

One love,

HJ

P.S. All five parts of this video should sequentially follow. Enjoy!

Sunday Matinee: Consciousness- A Convo with Deepak Chopra and Stuart Hameroff

Ni hao Jedi Masters!

Lemme see if I can amuse you a bit before you get to the good stuff.  It’s thrilling that the inhabitant tends to a cordial disposition this morning so I’ll capitalize.  Guess we’ll chalk to up to Solstice energy.  When not seeking an archery lesson from the Lord of Ayodhya himself, as you folks probably know I enjoy lectures on a variety of subjects. What can I say, the different inhabitants have different interests. Lol

There’s a look of consternation on the face of the therapists, so lemme clarify – though the inhabitants are many, the knower of the inhabitants is one and the same.

Somewhere I learned that the faculty of discrimination by which the entire electro-magnetic spectrum, or the universal fabric of reality is understood, cannot be located anywhere on the entire spectrum of wavelengths.  Essentially, there are no signals for consciousness, none, zero, zip. There is absolutely no methodology by which you can test or know that you are aware of the fact that you are reading the musings of a bar-stool philosophizer with a number in his name.  Notice the subtlety; you can test that you are reading by resonance imaging, but not the fact that you know that you are reading. If you’ve come across contrary evidence or info on this, by all means please share the wealth.

Whether a person is conscious is testable but not his awareness of the fact that he is conscious. Similarly, while the rods and cones of an animal’s eye may be activated, you cannot test whether it’s aware of the information processed by its brain. Here’s one for later, how about a garage door opener? Once your clicker “wakes” it with an electro-magnetic yell, you CANNOT test that it doesn’t “know” the garage door needs to be opened.  I know, I know, “H3nry I think you had one brownie too many!” True dat, but on a fundamental level though, I’ve retained validity. The jury’s still out on sanity but we’ll keep that between us.

Quick bit before I let you go.  Benjamin Whorf provided the best definition of objectifying that I’ve come across, so as my old man would say, let’s not re-invent the wheel.  He defined objectifying as “imaginatively spatializing quantities and potentials that are quite non-spatial” and I think this an important qualification to raise.  The point I want to convey when listening to these lectures is to not objectify consciousness.  Consciousness is not an object or some “thing” external to you like a nail-clipper, it is non-spatial.  It is fundamental awareness.

The scientific method requires an object of experimentation to be applicable ergo scientists typically measure causal efficacy. The qualia or hard problem of consciousness, namely why am I having a conscious experience eludes scientific logic. My take is that you wouldn’t destroy William Blake with the scientific method, so why subject the Atman to such.  Different experiential constructs are grasped with different mental faculties. Michelangelo’s David and Newtons’ Laws of motion are interpreted with different methodologies and the former loses no merit by not conforming to reductionist principles. Ergo, I think it safe to say that the lack of a logical scientific method to quantify something does not render it necessarily illogical.

Speaking of Whorf btw, our language fails us in so many ways folks. Great injunctive tool for exchanging info as in “how to do something” but a lousy descriptive mechanism.  Whorf’s paper, The Relation of Habitual Thought and Behavior to Language makes for great reading if the White Widow comes calling, so if you’re interested, LINK HERE.  Whorf explains why our language essentially traps us and limits the manner in which we conceptualize reality.  He even goes on to discuss why relativity is easier to understand in the Hopi language due to the temporal tense-ification and objectifying to which we subject ourselves as English speakers.  We imprison our minds in a cage of temporal units that we’ve objectified and lined in sequential rows.  While the beauty of life lies in the repeatlessness of each moment, we’ve lost this with our prisons of repeating days, weeks and months. Say nothing of the second to second insufferable scrutiny to which we must succumb on a daily basis.

But enough from me. Enjoy the vid and if we don’t cross paths in the next few days, have a wonderful time in whatever manner you celebrate the holidays and I’ll catch you on the Hyd3 side. Seek the subtle amigos as the capacity for self-reflection stands above all machinations of the mind.

One love,

HJ

P.S. In the spirit of the holidays, I’ll let Aretha take you home.

Sunday Matinee: Awaken To The Eternal w/ N. Maharaj

The seeker is he who is in search of himself.

Give up all questions except one: ‘Who am I?’ After all, the only fact you are sure of is that you are. The ‘I am’ is certain. The ‘I am this’ is not.

Struggle to find out what you are in reality.

To know what you are, you must first investigate and know what you are not.

Discover all that you are not — body, feelings thoughts, time, space, this or that — nothing, concrete or abstract, which you perceive can be you.

The very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive.

The clearer you understand on the level of mind you can be described in negative terms only, the quicker will you come to the end of your search and realize that you are the limitless being.

– Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Namaste Vagabonds, Vandals, and Viceroys!

I thought you guys would enjoy this if the consumption of gross utility became a tad unsatisfying, or if you just felt like enjoying all the seed bearing plants and herbs on this brisk Sunday morn. As usual, when sharing any system of understanding, it seems important to re-emphasize the prime directive, “Believe nothing, merely entertain ideas.” Absent the state of realization articulated by Nisargadatta that moves beyond the tendencies of the mind, I think it necessary to embrace the skeptical faculty, especially when engaged in pursuits of this nature.  Failure to do so often leads to losing sight of our individual necessities and obstacles.

Historically, a criteria for salvation has been the reduction of individuality to some replicated unit of repeatability with a predilection for production by promises of an objective paradisaical promise-land. But here’s the view from the Hyd3 side amigos. If you used the word “car” and I used the word “car” it’s highly unlikely that we would both conjure a 1989 GNX with a 3.8L intercooled turbo. (If you did btw, love the taste in automobiles!). The closest meeting of the minds we could achieve in the absence of additional details would be a motorized chariot of sorts for commuting from one place to another.  If we can’t agree on what constitutes a “car,”, what chance do we have on achieving consensus for abstractions like “heaven,” or “God?” Maharaj aims to take the seeker beyond these limited classifications of the mind, and therefore of language, by inquiry into what constitutes one’s individual essence.

Always love any cogitations you may wish to share and just in case you’re interested, here’s a link to an online version of Nisargadatta Maharaj’s tome, I Am That. Link here.

Sunday Matinee: Kundalini – Reflections of the Inner Light

One’s-Self I sing, a simple separate person,

Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-Masse.

Of physiology from top to toe I sing,

Not physiognomy alone nor brain alone is worthy for the Muse, I say the Form complete is worthier far,

The Female equally with the Male I sing.

Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and power,

Cheerful, for freest action form’d under the laws divine,

The Modern Man I sing.

—Walt Whitman

Various schools of ancient philosophy and insight were centered around unlocking the vast mysteries residing within the heavenly temple of the human body. Through gaining an understanding of himself, man sought to interpenetrate the mysteries underlying the music of the spheres. Over the centuries, Eastern philosophies have probed these mysteries at great depth and seem to share a common recognition of a super sensory energy system that resides within the human body.  The beauty of modernity however, lies in our ability to filter these ancient philosophies through the lens of inquiry to pierce through the mendacity that inevitably accrues with the passage of time.

I think this is a well done presentation introducing the pre-Vedic concept of Kundalini to the Western mind.  Kundalini represents the all-powerful cosmic creative energy that unifies both the physical and spiritual aspects of our existence and can be described as a mystical experience of self-realization.  I’m not in a position to speak with authority on this subject amigos, but instead share this to open further avenues of exploration for the curious among you. Enjoy!

Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. Luke 17:21

Sunday Matinee: Reflections on Oneness with Peter Russell

Ropes over the abyss,

I thought I’d give my dawgz a real mad izm sparker today.  I think it’s time for an update of our operational definitions. The overman’s concept of infinite is no longer locked in a dialectic with an antithetical rebel for the soul of mankind. Coincidencia oppositorum – it’s time to reconcile the duality amigos. I shared a lecture of Russell’s some time back. If your itchin to spend one of the nine, click here. You know what they say about curiosity folks.  But hey, rockin the old reality tunnel is never a bad thing. Enjoy!

It is a secret which every intellectual man quickly learns, that, beyond the energy of his possessed and conscious intellect, he is capable of a new energy (as of an intellect doubled on itself), by abandonment to the nature of things; that, beside his privacy of power as an individual man, there is a great public power, on which he can draw, by unlocking, at all risks, his human doors, and suffering the ethereal tides to roll and circulate through him: then is he caught up into the life of the Universe, his speech is thunder, his thought is law, and his words are universally intelligible as the plants and animals.

Sunday Matinee: Symbols of an Alien Sky

Lights of the Logos,

I think you vagabonds will dig this if Robin and the Friar visit bearing shrubs from Sherwood today. Somewhere I heard that mythology is the penultimate truth as mythological language is but a metaphor.  However, there is a line of reasoning suggesting that pervasive mythological themes that transcend geography were inspired by events within the physical universe.  There exists a unity among the archetypes that underpins our mythology and this is a wonderful attempt at addressing that unity.  No pontificating today however amigos,  I’ll let you jump right in. As usual, please don’t be bashful about chiming in on anything discussed, or even not discussed.  Knowledge is hoarded while gnosis is shared. Enjoy!

Sunday Matinee: The Men of the Fifth World

Hujambo Midgardians!

Resistance is Futile – Borg maxim

I think it was Kant who wrote about the futility of one trying to perceive that which exists without use of his or her perceptive apparatus. If it comes from a doyen of philosophy like Mr. Kant, then I definitely feel okay about my little spiel. Although he wasn’t specifically referring to cultural biases, it follows that we cannot evaluate any information presented outside the perceptual framework with which we understand the world.  Our impressions, both sensory and mental, are often colored by a lot more than we may initially concede – conditioning, fears, cultural norms, dietary prejudices, etc. Thus, when viewing these programs about indigenous cultures, it’s important not to apply our value judgments to create hierarchical comparisons when evaluating any custom.

I’ll leave you with this compadres.  Although the Borg are right and it’s impossible to remain untainted from the march of empire, there are certain precepts that only naiveté would prevent us from incorporating within the fabric of our own cultural narrative. Concepts like societal organization around mutual-aid and harmony with the ecosystems that sustain us are quite meritorious. Who knows, maybe the way to subvert the machine is to introduce the reality tunnels of these tribal cultures as sub-routines within the system? I’ll leave the spiritual considerations for an individual assessment. Enjoy!

HJ
