Sunday Matinee: Awaken To The Eternal w/ N. Maharaj

The seeker is he who is in search of himself.

Give up all questions except one: ‘Who am I?’ After all, the only fact you are sure of is that you are. The ‘I am’ is certain. The ‘I am this’ is not.

Struggle to find out what you are in reality.

To know what you are, you must first investigate and know what you are not.

Discover all that you are not — body, feelings thoughts, time, space, this or that — nothing, concrete or abstract, which you perceive can be you.

The very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive.

The clearer you understand on the level of mind you can be described in negative terms only, the quicker will you come to the end of your search and realize that you are the limitless being.

I thought you guys would enjoy this if the consumption of gross utility became a tad unsatisfying, or if you just felt like enjoying all the seed bearing plants and herbs on this brisk Sunday morn. As usual, when sharing any system of understanding, it seems important to re-emphasize the prime directive, “Believe nothing, merely entertain ideas.” Absent the state of realization articulated by Nisargadatta that moves beyond the tendencies of the mind, I think it necessary to embrace the skeptical faculty, especially when engaged in pursuits of this nature.  Failure to do so often leads to losing sight of our individual necessities and obstacles.

Historically, a criteria for salvation has been the reduction of individuality to some replicated unit of repeatability with a predilection for production by promises of an objective paradisaical promise-land. But here’s the view from the Hyd3 side amigos. If you used the word “car” and I used the word “car” it’s highly unlikely that we would both conjure a 1989 GNX with a 3.8L intercooled turbo. (If you did btw, love the taste in automobiles!). The closest meeting of the minds we could achieve in the absence of additional details would be a motorized chariot of sorts for commuting from one place to another.  If we can’t agree on what constitutes a “car,”, what chance do we have on achieving consensus for abstractions like “heaven,” or “God?” Maharaj aims to take the seeker beyond these limited classifications of the mind, and therefore of language, by inquiry into what constitutes one’s individual essence.

      HI Dr B. It’s great that a public persona with the prestige of Brand is sharing this philosophy with a wider audience. It lies at the core of Upanishadic teaching but that is an often less traveled path. Kudos to Mr Brand.

    I have pondered for years, especially during hot showers, how to define oneself. I quickly discovered that referring to oneself as “a …” was superficial, as was referring to what one does. Using a list of likes and dislikes worked for a while. Listing skills and accomplishments was again too superficial.

    Who am I not? I hadn’t considered that method. I see how it extends perception to infinity, and thus extends the definition of “I” likewise.

    Your example of the car brings to my mind my experience as I looked out a pair of windows, separated by a thin vertical board. One eye was looking out each side of the board. I looked at an apple tree in the distance. Each eye had its own story of what the tree looked like at that moment. Each eye had numerous stories of that apple tree from different times. If my two eyes could disagree with them selves and each other, how could two entities — who are more distant from each other than my two eyes that connected to the same brain — agree on defining God, which is much larger and more complex than that apple tree?

      Hi Grace, I’m glad you decided to comment. Hot showers do seem to be great places for contemplation irrespective of that which we are not. lol The philosophy of Maharaj just seemed to click with me and I’m glad that it resonated with you too. It’s nice to hear from someone else trying to grasp the root of the “I” thought.

      Totally agree with your conclusions. The enlightened teachers have taught for millenia that we are just bubbles of the infinite and omni-present awareness that is the core essence of all things. Though our experiences condition us differently, the ever aware Self that lies at the core of your being also lies at the core of my existence.

      Whether it’s the web, or globalization, or whatever, this realization of common ground seems to be a key aspect of the new millennium. Keep well till we chat again amiga.

      Before I prematurely submit, just wanted to add that the methodology by which you realized the difficulty of achieving consensus on the Bird of Truth was pretty cool. :) It’s nice when realizations are had in the midst of the mundane.
