Sunday Matinee: The Cosmic Game with Stanislav Grof

Once upon a time, I, Zhuangzi, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, for all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Zhuangzi. Soon I awoke, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.

Dr. Grof gives a wonderful lecture on the exploration of expanded states of awareness and the impact to the self. I thoroughly enjoyed this chat and hope you folks find it equally stimulating.

One love,

P.S.  I often wonder about the legitimacy of a state apparatus that infantilizes “free” adults and aims to prevent the exploration of alternative states of consciousness. The Schedule 1 classification is readily applied to all psychoactive compounds that allow for a departure from the problem solver mindset, both naturally occurring and synthetic. This is not open scientific discourse in a free society.  This is systemic control.  Sometimes I feel the goal may be to prevent the worker bee from achieving intimate cognition of the wretched character underpinning aspirational consumerism while their fellow men sleep on the street.  Hey, someone has to buy $3000 shoes made from slaughtered alligators.  Subject for another day however amigos.

  1. Reminds me of the 1st verse of a poem by Pablo Neruda:

    A child’s foot doesn’t know it’s a foot yet
And it wants to be a butterfly or an apple
But then the rocks and pieces of glass,
    the streets, the stairways
and the roads of hard earth
keep teaching the foot that it can’t fly,
that it can’t be a round fruit on a branch.
    Then the child’s foot
    was defeated, it fell
    in battle,
    it was a prisoner,
condemned to life in a shoe.

Truly masterful wordsmithing! The condemnation seems to be a necessity. I wonder if the butterfly or apple would be possible were there no rocks and pieces of glass? Nice share Dr B.

  2. Mr. Grof delivered what can certainly be described as a “jaw-dropping” talk. Man.

  3. Oh God….
    Tonight can only take
    True talk
    about Shiv
    for a few minutes
    so intense
    turned it off
    to simply
    His Presence

    Sometimes cannot even speak
    the great Lord’s name
    lips tremble
    words cease to exist

    ….with no use of substance
    but the Bhakti.

    Thanks for this

I love Grof H3nry, and this talk is a gem. I especially like the point he makes at around :48, that the creativity seeks expression and he compares to cell division! That is such a great comparison because it recognizes that the body and mind are one; that we are psychically just as we are physically.

    Thanks for posting!

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

I think that’s a good point Debra. Such a connection might also help to explain “deviations” like the placebo effect. I had to listen to this a few times to get my head around all the ideas, but you’re right, it’s a gem. I thought the idea about deities as maps of the unconscious was also pretty cool.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s gonna be tough to top this one.

      Hi Cindy,
I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I also find Grof’s work to be provocative. It sure is great to have access to these ideas without lifting a finger. Card catalogue? what’s that? lol

Enjoy the rest of your vacation. Lovely photos!
