Sunday Matinee: Symbols of an Alien Sky

Lights of the Logos,

I think you vagabonds will dig this if Robin and the Friar visit bearing shrubs from Sherwood today. Somewhere I heard that mythology is the penultimate truth as mythological language is but a metaphor.  However, there is a line of reasoning suggesting that pervasive mythological themes that transcend geography were inspired by events within the physical universe.  There exists a unity among the archetypes that underpins our mythology and this is a wonderful attempt at addressing that unity.  No pontificating today however amigos,  I’ll let you jump right in. As usual, please don’t be bashful about chiming in on anything discussed, or even not discussed.  Knowledge is hoarded while gnosis is shared. Enjoy!

One love,

HJ

I’ve been reading about mythology as shaped by the universe too. David Abram and Songlines, and the way the environment and ancestors intertwine, shaping the earth and sharing the stories of the journey through song. Very interesting!

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

Hi Nicci, it really is. The clues all seem to hint that we’re missing something in our story. The fun part for me is listening to all the different ideas on what that something is. Thank you for the David Abram introduction. I look forward to learning more about Songlines.
I’m always intrigued by more holistic models of the evolution of the human experiment. The song shaping the singer. Nice!

  2. Looking forward to it. Archeology and human anthropology are undergoing significant revision – increasingly it appears that prior to the invention of writing oral history transmitted historical facts from generation to generation as myth. Just because it wasn’t written down, conventional historians have treated it as myth.

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

I agree Doc, much can be said for the oral tradition. Maybe a bias of our print culture? Or it could be an archaeological conspiracy to preserve a particular world view. I’m leaning towards a degree of validity in both. I know you’ll dig this one. The production value alone made it enjoyable.

  3. Hey H3nry! Great choice – and what a nice dose of synchronicity it brings. I watched this documentary awhile ago and was so fascinated by it; it was not too long after I had initially discovered your blog, actually. At the time of discovering your blog I was really struck by your tagline “Believe nothing, simply entertain ideas” and I used it as a fun “mantra of sorts” for awhile, and I distinctly remember that when I saw this doc, I thought, I’m really living the “Believe nothing, simply entertain ideas”! What a nice nod from the universe that the doc shows up here now, things coming full circle it seems. It is such a joy to connect with you here…Hope you are well and surfing the waves ;)

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

Always well compadre. I’ll give you one better. How about “Become the ocean!” lol
Good to hear from you Amanda. Definitely feelin the vibe about the synchronicities.

Another fascinating video, H3nry. In some ways, connecting with the observations of earlier eras made me wonder what it would have been like to see the sky of earlier times and experience the “electrical” energy of those times. It also makes me wonder what is energizing our present times.

For some reason, the video reminded me of Jared Diamond’s “Guns, Germs, and Steel,” but on a much larger historic and cosmic scale. Perhaps it is the way both Diamond’s work and the video highlight what connects people around the globe through time (and both suggest how different environments or vantage points might lead to cultural differences in terms of development and meaning).

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

Hi Carol, always a pleasure to read your comments. I myself have often wondered about what “energies” lie behind the present. If the physical world is merely an outward manifestation of the implicate order, then what exactly drives the phenomena we experience as reality?
Thank you for the introduction to Diamond. Though unfamiliar with his work, it certainly looks quite interesting. There is also a documentary titled Guns, Germs, and Steel that I’ll have to feature when time permits. I certainly do like the idea of environment leading to cultural difference. There is a line of argument that suggests the belligerence of the northern European cultures is a function of the hostile natural environments in which these cultures evolved. If the very act of group survival is one of a “fight” mentality towards harsh surroundings, I think there’s an iota of validity. Not sure how much though lol.
These groups would ultimately require organization around principles of mutual aid in order to thrive.
      Thanks for stopping by Carol.
