Mind over Matter

What’s da deal Superfriends?!

I trust that your week was not too arduous an experience. I had a chance to gloss over the Roberts’ opinion in the McCutcheon case this afternoon and actually started to pen a diatribe. My higher self would intervene however and I decided to hit the delete key instead and not indulge the negativity.  A two or three line summation should suffice to capture my thoughts regarding this issue and allow us to progress to the “fun” stuff that much faster.

The inundation of the airwaves with partisan trash and mudslinging has already begun with the mid-terms right around the corner. With both parties purchased in the upcoming elections, please expect the constellation of concessions to the corporate cabal to continue. Casting a ballot for either party also tacitly endorses 1/3 of the budget being siphoned off to facilitate a machine of human sacrifice, the genocide in Palestine, a further contraction of the already dwindling network of social services, and a continued concentration of capital. You’ve just gotta love bipartisan consensus. But enough with the world of make believe however, time for something that you may actually find a tad useful in navigating this experiential slice between the first inhale and final exhale. And maybe distracts you just enough from the routine of business as usual.

I was recently privileged to stumble across an essay Power and the Use of Thought by C.W. Leadbeater. Link here and audio version here. I thought this was a fascinating read and if you have the time, you might want to give it a once over. What struck me as interesting is that back in 1911, he possessed the understanding that thoughts are things. Now this was not discovered until only very recently. I know, you’re probably like, “what the heck are you talking about thoughts are things H3nry? That sounds pretty absurd.” But just go with me for a sec amigos.

If you’ve followed the videos that have been shared in the past, I hope that you remember the discussion on mass and energy. If not, here’s the gist. I’m pretty sure that you’ve heard of Einstein’s ubiquitous energy mass equation E= mc^2, where E – energy, m – mass, c – speed of light

Well since c is a constant it is merely a scaling factor relating energy and mass. i.e. some mass (m) multiplied by c^2 is the value of E. So energy is essentially mass, at least a barely detectable, trace amount of mass.

Now here is where it gets really interesting.  Alan Jasanoff, a professor of Biological Engineering at MIT developed an MRI sensor that measures concentrations of dopamine, a brain chemical that carries messages between neurons and is involved in learning, movement, and other activities.  Like a standard MRI, it picks up a magnetic change in a protein—only in this system, the magnetic signature changes when the protein binds to dopamine rather than oxygen. This allows for the measure of individual neurons.

Researchers can show the patient something—a picture or string of words—and measure the response to the stimulus. If the patient was shown say an image of Halle Berry, a single neuron would fire. As neurons create electrical potentials that “fire” and propagate throughout the brain, the patterns of firing can be described as “waves.” These propagation patterns can also be represented as waves of energy. Now if we measure the energy of the individual neuron creating this wave when a stimulus is presented, we can plug it into our original equation and voila! We can solve for the mass of the individual thought. I guess there’s truth to the claim that you’re weighed down by your thoughts after all. Lol

But when do we have a single negative thought? Unlike positive thinking which requires work and flutters away without a moments notice, we constantly replay negative thoughts in our mind. It seems like a pattern of pernicious thinking is more of a burden than anyone may have initially realized.

So now you might be wondering, “So how does this actually impact my day to day existence?” Here’s where we must return to days of yore and some of the wisdom our ancestors bequeath us before the Vatican Church thought it superfluous.

Bodies of esoteric wisdom such as Hermeticism and Taoism espouse the fundamental principle of polarity. If you remember the principle as outlined in the previous share of The Kybalion – everything is dual as the Universe is a coincidence of opposites – thesis and antithesis, heat and cold, Yin and Yang. Opposites are identical in nature but different in degree.  It explains that in everything there are two poles, or opposite aspects, and that “opposites” are really only the two extremes of the same thing, with many varying degrees between them.

To illustrate: heat and cold, although “opposites,” are really the same thing, the differences consisting merely of degrees of the same.  When next you glance at a thermometer, try to determine where heat ends and cold begins. It is dependent on subjective experience alone. Anger and compassion, love and fear, happy and sad, etc. each is an illustration of the opposite poles underlying the same archetypal construct. So opposing states are different degrees of the same construct but not different ones. Think of it like this, you can move from sad to happy but this is unrelated to the dichotomy of love/ fear or calm/ upset.

Polarity is also an operation of the mental plane, thus dominated by mind. Now I’m sure you’ve all experienced the transition from one emotive state to its opposite pole where a specific issue was concerned. Say for example you have a negative thought related to some event X. After some interval of time however you’re able to reassess the situation and you are no longer unhappy about the occurrence of X. This transmutation of mood from sad to happy regarding X is a shift in polarity, albeit a generally slow process.  But given that mind controls, the movement is not dependent on the slow drawl of time since by mentally willing the change it can be accomplished much sooner.

Now if thru the operation of mind a negative thought can be transmuted into a positive one and vice versa, and we’ve already shown that thoughts have mass, aren’t you exercising mind over matter when you practice mental transmutation?!

Your minds are capable of wondrous things amigos. I’m once again reminded of the Pythic maxim “Know Thyself.” You owe it to yourself to inquire into yourself without the intrusion of oppressive external coordinates thwarting the inquiry. I’ll leave you with the following disclaimer folks- I don’t profess to be an expert on any of these subjects and share this info as a point of origin for additional discussion. If you can add anything to further our understanding, please don’t hesitate to chime in. And If you must literally bear the burden of your contemplations, fill yourself with wisdom, love, joy and other thoughts that although do have mass, also serve to enliven the Spirit.

One love,

HJ

  1. Henry,
Excellent talk from C.W. Leadbeater. Kind of surprised – never heard of the man before. Of course, reading the comments below the YT video someone has to point out he got in trouble with young boys. Do you have any knowledge or opinion on that allegation? What is your opinion of the website churchofspiritualscience.org? After listening to what was said, I would be willing to spend time reading Leadbeater, but need some help on that “buzzkill” allegation. Did the man ever give credit to the source of his knowledge, and if so, who? How about the original or earliest known source?
    Thanks. Very thought-provoking. :)
    Jerry

Hey Jerry, I am glad you enjoyed the lecture. My other awareness of Leadbeater is as the author of a book on Freemasonry and its ancient rites and as a member of the Theosophical Society. Supposedly he was a clairvoyant but beyond that I couldn’t say with any certainty. I wouldn’t let the allegations detract from the info being shared though bud. Whether the ideas have merit is the only thing I’m interested in. And I did like the direction of his inquiry.
The website looked like it’s worth exploring a bit. Quite an interesting collection of thinkers. Thx for sharing.

  2. The whole science of acupuncture (and other eastern healing arts) is based on a balance flow of energy in the human body. The Chinese call it “xi” and most illnesses can be traced to a blockage or imbalance of “xi.” I’ve been relying on acupuncture for over 20 years now when I get sinus infections and bronchitis. With the advent of so many antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it’s the only thing that works for me.

Western physicians have tended to pooh pooh the notion of chi, as traditional medical training doesn’t require an understanding of quantum physics. Hopefully this is changing as the importance of quantum physics for in all biological sciences is fully recognized.

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

Western physicians are only trained to do blood work and dispense prednisone and other immuno-suppressive meds. If we exclude infectious disease and surgical remedies, the entire allopathic paradigm is based on symptom suppression or as big pharma likes to consider it, customers for life.

I’m glad that you’ve been able to find relief in holistic medicine. The body is not an amalgam of assorted parts and cannot successfully be cured if considered as such.
Good health to ya Dr B.
