Share the Wealth: Sadhana – The Realization of Life by Rabindranath Tagore

a-buddha-in-the-rain_lFacts are many, but the truth is one – Rabindranath Tagore

Kin of Kalki,

It’s been a while since our last installment of Share the Wealth so one is definitely due. To compensate for the prolonged delay however, I’ve decided to make today’s share a truly insightful spiritual discourse. I thought some wisdom grounded in the Eastern mystic tradition of the Upanishads would be a nice change of pace from our previous adventure with Christian Rosenkreutz. Same criteria apply as the other nuggets I’ve shared, free and short, well relatively short anyway.

The word “sadhana” is of Sanskrit origin and is literally translated as “a means of accomplishing something.” It can be considered as an ego transcending spiritual practice. In addressing the relationship with the infinitude from which all things proceed, this narrative touches on the virtues and failings of the human condition and makes a case for the merits of transcending the state of ego consciousness.  Topics like the problem of self and evil, the appreciation of beauty, and one’s awareness of soul consciousness are all eloquently addressed by the author. For fans of the written word, I suggest keeping a pen and paper handy as Tagore’s word-craft is the embodiment of flowery elegance.

I think this one will warp your reality tunnels amigos. The author really does conduct a deeply profound inquiry into the nature of our roles as mediators between the abstract and the concrete. Sadhana “found” me when an awareness of the ideas contained therein was necessary, and my genuine hope is that it serves as a beacon illuminating your path to realizing the grand pattern of universal procedure. It’s a brilliant little book that you’ll find yourself reading multiple times for a comprehensive digestion of its contents. Although less than 90 typed pages of legible font, its length is no indication of its profundity. I’ll also link to a Librivox audiobook download for your listening pleasure.

Here’s an excerpt of the summary provided by the Spiritual Bee site that shared the text:

“Sadhana – The Realisation of Life” is a breathtaking collection of spiritual discourses given by Rabindranath Tagore to the boys in his school, in Bolpur, West Bengal. A repository of the timeless wisdom of the East, Sadhana is one of the most profound books on spirituality that you will ever read! We highly recommend it as a starter book to any seeker of spiritual wisdom.

Compiled and translated by Tagore from his Bengali lectures, the book consists of eight essays, in which Tagore answers some of the most profound questions of life.

Sadhana is one of those rare books that need to be read slowly, as each sentence contains an immense amount of wisdom to be digested. In the end Tagore’s captivating and rational explanations will leave you feeling breathless, exhilarated and brimming with peace, happiness and joy, as you become aware of the tremendous unifying force behind this immensely diverse and awe-inspiring Creation!”

As usual, I think the authors’ own words will best help you to decide if embracing this vibe is a worthy investment of your time. So folks, here are a few quotes to gauge whether or not this is your cup of tea.

“True deliverance of man is the deliverance from ignorance. It is not in destroying anything that is positive and real, but that which is negative, which obstructs our vision of truth.”

“Facts are many, but the truth is one. The animal intelligence knows facts, the human mind has power to apprehend truth. The apple falls from the tree, the rain descends upon the earth – you can go on burdening your memory with such facts and never come to an end. But once you get hold of the law of gravitation you can dispense with the necessity of collecting facts ad infinitum.”

“When a man does not realise his kinship with the world, he lives in a prison-house whose walls are alien to him. When he meets the eternal spirit in all objects, then is he emancipated, for then he discovers the fullest significance of the world into which he is born; then he finds himself in perfect truth, and his harmony with the all is established.”

“This is the ultimate end of man, to find the One which is in him; which is his truth, which is his soul; the key with which he opens the gate of the spiritual life, the heavenly kingdom. His desires are many, and madly they run after the varied objects of the world, for therein they have their life and fulfilment. But that which is one in him is ever seeking for unity – unity in knowledge, unity in love, unity in purposes of will; its highest joy is when it reaches the infinite one within its eternal unity.”

This world-song is never for a moment separated from its singer. It is not fashioned from any outward material. It is his joy itself taking never-ending form. It is the great heart sending the tremor of its thrill over the sky. There is a perfection in each individual strain of this music, which is the revelation of completion in the incomplete. No one of its notes is final, yet each reflects the infinite.”

I could go on, but I’ll leave the other gems for you to unearth as you progress through the work.  If you find this book at all useful in your journey, please pass it on to a fellow traveler who may also benefit in his or her own quest for understanding.
