Sunday Matinee: The War on Democracy

A discussion with a fellow blogger recently reminded me of the huge information gap that exists between the general American public and the rest of the hemisphere regarding US policy towards Latin America. (Just wanted to say thank you for the reminder. Here’s a link to Electrica in the Desert where Claire raises awareness on the often neglected narratives interwoven with the march of empire.)  In the award winning film The War on Democracy, journalist and documentary filmmaker John Pilger explores the relationship between the invisible hand that operates unchecked in Washington DC and the other countries in the hemisphere.

The following quote is taken from Pilger’s website:

“Using archive footage sourced by Michael Moore’s archivist Carl Deal, the film shows how serial US intervention, overt and covert, has toppled a series of legitimate governments in the Latin American region since the 1950s. The democratically elected Chilean government of Salvador Allende, for example, was ousted by a US backed coup in 1973 and replaced by the military dictatorship of General Pinochet. Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador have all been invaded by the United States.

John Pilger interviews several ex-CIA agents who took part in secret campaigns against democratic countries in the region. He investigates the School of the Americas in the US state of Georgia, where Pinochet’s torture squads were trained along with tyrants and death squad leaders in Haiti, El Salvador, Brazil and Argentina.”

Ockam’s razor is often described by the following analogy – If you’re on a farm and hear footsteps, think horses and not zebras. Obviously our consideration would be somewhat different if we were Masai tribesmen living on the African plain. But I digress. People often look to a veiled cabal of “illuminated” men to explain the atrocities perpetrated in the world today. In keeping with Mr. Ockam’s principle however, the adherents of Weishaupt’s doctrine are unnecessary to explain the wanton disregard for the value of non-Caucasoid lives in every corner of the globe.

In the 1970s Archbishop Oscar Romero pleaded with the self-proclaimed Christian, Jimmy Carter for a cessation of the aid provided to the military junta slaughtering the people of El Salvador. Carter refused. Romero would be assassinated while delivering mass shortly thereafter. There was no secret conspiracy necessary here. The practice of funding, training, and offering military aid to power hungry psychopaths that seek to topple any elected government aiming for a more egalitarian approach to resource allocation is not limited to El Salvador.

The notion that a conspiratorial cabal is unnecessary however does not in and of itself negate the presence of one. I once believed and defended the position that this is a nation of laws and not of men. Upon a closer examination of the historical record however, it became apparent that the rule of law is merely the public façade of rules promulgated by men who exist outside the confines of law. This is analogous to the exoteric/ esoteric dichotomy that exists within the sphere of religious doctrine.

I’ll leave you with the following to consider. Way back in the day when beepers exemplified upward social mobility and Rob and Fab laid all blame on the rain, I was taught that the Gulf of Tonkin attack provided the justification for a Congressional resolution allowing for military intervention in Vietnam. Recently declassified NSA documents have revealed that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was a fabrication. 60,000 healthy young Americans and millions of defenseless Vietnamese villagers dead over a false flag operation.

Just ask yourself, who has the power and authority to stage an attack on a US destroyer, deceive Congress and goad the American public into sacrificing their sons? Even if you weren’t alive during the Vietnam era, the script should sound familiar as it plays out time and time again. The colonization of Iraq was also based upon a lie, followed thereafter by a media blitz grounded in self-referential evidentiary support. I don’t think anyone can legitimately believe that the invasion of Iraq was the sole work of George W. Bush, Condoleezza Hemings  Rice, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. Slanting the global narrative in the approved light to justify unfettered butchery required more than the efforts of this motley crew.  Not a single war crime was ever levied against the architects of the illegal war however, while Julian Assange languishes at the Ecuadorean embassy in London for revealing the illegality. This is rule by law.

With Freemasons and Theosophists targeted as the source of all tyranny by the unsophisticated, the real conspirators operate in plain view wielding the force majeure of the state. No more than 20 AIPAC supporters strong armed the US taxpayer for $800 billion under the guise of aiding distressed homeowners, recorded no minutes of the manner of disbursement, and included a provision that the decisions of then Treasury Secretary Hank Paulsen cannot be challenged in ANY court.  The money could therefore be disbursed according to Paulsens’ whims, with no fear or retribution for failure to comply with the objectives expressed to gain Congressional passage of TARP.  And yet we still doubt a Zionist banking conspiracy. smh

Hope you enjoy the film.

One love,

HJ

P.S. There are two very poignant scenes in the movie where Pilger interviews both a CIA automaton and a member of the Chilean bourgeoisie. I would like you to pay attention to the disdain and contempt with which both individuals view the humble working class man. Honestly compadres, this level of hatred eludes me.

  1. Oh drat. Today is Monday in New Zealand. I don’t think I can wait till Sunday. I loved the video on psychedelic drugs, by the way. It’s full of insights on how European culture suppresses self-knowledge and awareness in order to consolidate political control. I was also intrigued by the use ibogaine to treat alcoholism and heroin addiction. I checked and ibogaine is legal in New Zealand, and there’s a Maori treatment center that uses it to treat alcoholism (heroin addiction isn’t that big a problem here – yet).

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

Hi Doc, for some bizarre reason, your comment was sent to the spam queue. Glad you enjoyed the video. It is absolutely ludicrous that we’re infantilized regarding the exploration of our own consciousness. And you’re right, it stems from a desire to exert control. Hey someone has to aspire to pay $2000 for a handbag. Madison Ave certainly doesn’t want the hamsters realizing the illusory nature of the wheel.
I think Leary also did work on treating alcoholism with LSD and had less than a 20% rate of recidivism. The research was killed shortly after and it was made a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
Oh well, I guess getting loaded at “happy hour” after enriching the bourgeoisie coffers and then heading home to kill another motorist or get a DUI is more attractive a prospect from the standpoint of the powers that be.
These botanicals are far more beneficial to the human condition than alcohol and caffeine and yet are vilified and prosecuted with the full ambit of state power. Booze on the other hand is responsible for thousands of annual deaths, spousal abuse and other pernicious consequences, offers nothing but an elaboration of the verbal facility and a non recognition of social cues, and is peddled as the great elixir of pleasure with the approval of the State. Imho, this is a mystery that only yields only one conclusion.

The playbook of destabilization and provocation is being followed to the letter in Venezuela where “opposition” forces are trying to unseat a globally recognized, democratically elected President. In Ukraine, “opposition” forces are trying to unseat a globally recognized, democratically elected President. In Syria, “opposition” forces are trying to unseat a globally recognized, democratically elected President. In Libya, “opposition” forces unseated a globally recognized, democratically elected President…

“Way back in the day when beepers exemplified upward social mobility and Rob and Fab laid all blame on the rain”…ah, now that’s a blast from the past, H3nry.

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

As I watch this play out time and time again Jeff, what troubles me most is the often forgotten “collateral damage.” The mutilation of fathers and mothers on the way to the market is overlooked as a tolerable externality of empire building. I find this to be morally reprehensible. I think raising awareness of the irreconcilability between the domestic media spin and the actual course of events is the first step towards any shift in policy. The public must be made aware that these “opposition” forces are rarely organic and in countries like Bahrain where the movement is in fact a genuine response to an oppressive regime, we overtly and covertly aid the oppressors.

Thanks for your input bud. I figured some folks would get a kick outta that line.

      • Jeff Nguyen says:

Civilian populations always bear the brunt of military operations. A fact that Americans have largely been sheltered from. Drones have been accomplishing the same levels of psychological terror as children can no longer play outside and schools are closed early for fear of rumored strikes in targeted countries. I addressed some of these issues of media spin and the U.S. role in destabilizing democratically elected governments in my latest post.

        • H3nry J3kyll says:

Heading over to read it and thanks for the heads up. This isn’t the first time your posts haven’t appeared in my reader. I’ll check my settings and let you know if it happens again.

  3. Henry, thanks for posting this, it is most informative and valuable, though I’m not sure I can watch it again. I can’t fathom that seething hatred of those who have never harmed you either. People do hate and fear those they know they have mistreated — I wouldn’t call it guilt, rather a reasonable dread of well-earned retribution. Is that what it is? I’m not sure. But we all see it, time after time. It must be extremely useful in order to justify all the unspeakable atrocities they have the desire and the power to commit — either before the fact, or after it. Does the hatred, fear and contempt push them to do things, or just allow them to live with themselves afterwards? Assuming they HAVE any doubts or second thoughts, ever. I can never tell. – Linda

    • P.S. Actually, my best guess is that we are invisible, inconsequential, and we just don’t matter a damn to those running the game boards. As individuals, as groups, we are not even incidental to their plans. Indifference may be the ultimate evil. – LLF

      • H3nry J3kyll says:

I often have similar sentiments regarding the seething hatred Linda. I must agree with you that the lives of ordinary people are no more important than livestock to the Kissingers of the world. I think maybe the hatred and fear is both motive and justification for the murderous acts of power seekers??
I also can’t wrap my head around it. Call it humanity or compassion or just a plain old weakness, but I can’t hate another person stemming out of perceived differences of ideology.
Ah well, this blog has helped me to realize that there are people like you in the world who share my sentiments. Thank you Linda for letting me know that I do not stand alone. Maybe a day will come when the virtuous shall return to govern with a partiality for humanity and justice.

  4. “Maybe a day will come when the virtuous shall return to govern with a partiality for humanity and justice.”

A word of caution, “please don’t hold your breath in anticipation of that event unfolding!”

Like you, I would dearly love to see that day, but a snowball stands a better chance inside an erupting volcano, than what both of us hope for.

    H3nry J3kyll, you’re a good egg! And I sincerely mean that!

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

I definitely agree with you Shelby. The human experiment must progress a long way indeed before those notions become feasible.
And thank you for the compliment. It’s been a long time since I’ve been described as a good anything, so I do appreciate it.

  5. We absolutely MUST find a way to defend Venezuela. Every sign points to CIA involvement, and has clearly done so since Hugo Chavez’ first election: America has been agog with furious entitlement re.”our” oil . This is where the gains made in the region will be smashed; this is where Central America topples.
The US is not kidding around – it never has and it never will re. Latin America.
Thanks for this post – and BTW, you ARE a good egg.

!NO MAS! !NO MAS! !NO MAS! ! NO MAS!

    • H3nry J3kyll says:

Hi Claire, it’s good to hear from you. Is there ever a case of suppression of rights, political turmoil and upheaval in this hemisphere that didn’t involve Capitalism’s Invisible Army? I completely agree that the importance of Venezuela to the burgeoning movement towards a more egalitarian approach to resource allocation in Central and South America cannot be understated. Leaders like Evo Morales and Rafael Correa had aligned themselves with Chavez and his view of self-determination for the individual nation states of the hemisphere.

Combating the ideology espoused by corporate media in Venezuela and the C.I.A. instigators is a task that the people must overcome however. It is going to be quite interesting to see whether Maduro can actually withstand the assault from the capital class.

      Lol. Thanks for the compliment.
